This is a GREAT once a week unit study for all ages that helps kids learn where the traditions of Christmas come from. We will learn what traditions came from the Dutch (like Santa Claus), The English,the Germans, and putting it all together to study and American Christmas.
We will meet once a week for 3 hours a day, Monday November 30, December 7, December 14, and December 21. All 4 classes including all supplies is just $60 with a $10 siblng discount. Class runs from 11-2. Parents welcome but not required.

The first week we will study the Dutch learning all about the tradition of Santa Claus, we will read about some traditions of Christmas and begin making a Christmas trivia game. We will learn some Geography by location Asia minor, the Netherlands, and New yourk on the globe, we will make some homemade hot cholcolate that can be given as a gift, we will make some homemade marshmallows to go with our hot cholcolate mix, we will listen to some Christmas music and talk about the instruments we hear, we will listen to different styles of cChristmas music and talk about what we like, and we will watch a classic Christmas movie. The second week we will study the English. We will learn Geography by locating Great Britian on the globe. We will learn about the traditons we get from English including caroling, we will learn llife skills and make some yummy wassail, We will make our own musical instrument, studying music some more, we will make a poster of intruments , we will make our own Christmas cards ( an English tradition) and watch a Christmas classic movie.

The third week we study the Germans learning where Germany is on the globe. We will also find Pennsylvania, Ohio and North Carolna becauuse those are the states where the Germans settled. We will listen to at least part of Handels Messiah and read a bit about the composer. We will build gingerbread houses, read Hansel and Gretel, and add some traditions to our Christmas Trivia game. We will then watch a Chrismas classic movie. If you want a family read along we suggest finishing a Christmas Carol.
The forth week we will study an American Christmas. We will learn about a time that it was illegal to celebrate Christmas right here in America and more. We will listen to White Christmas and read about the composer, We will string cranberries and popcorn to decorate a tree for the birds outside, we will play our Christmas Trivia game and watch a Christmas classic movie.
If you are a Boy Scout, we will complete almost all of the requirments for your music merit badge. If you are an American Heritage girl, we will complete almost all of your Music Appreciation badge.
